Foligno, The Town Of The Quintana

Foligno, Italy is one of the most unique towns in the location that it was built. During Roman times, many of the villages in the Umbria area were built high atop hills for protection from invading armies. Foligno was built in the valley on the banks of the Topino River where the river drained into the swamplands that were created by the river itself.

This magnificent town today still has the exact lay out it did when it was first established in the 12th century. The Cathedral and the town hall were both constructed between 1262 and 1265. Many visitors come to Foligno to stand in awe of the beautiful medieval churches and palaces of this unique town. Some of the most popular attractions include the Pretorio Palace, Ortini Palace, and the Trinci Palace. The Pretorio and the Ortini date back to 1515. All three palaces still have the wonderful glamour they did at the time of their birth with majestic decorations and magical frescoes that look down at all that pass by.

The Romanic church of St. Mary Infraportas and the Abbey of Sassovivo are also very popular stops. The Romanic church’s bell tower is an awesome example of architectural design of the 11th century while the frescoes date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. When you stand at the foot of the 128 columns of the Abbey of Sassovivo you will feel the mystical and magical power that was once felt centuries ago.

When you are searching for a place to spend the night, you are sure to hear that many people enjoy La Castellina and Residence Menotre. La Castellina offers a wonderful and comfortable nights rest for small groups and offers a swimming pool, and other great activities that will get you up close and personal with the natural surroundings of Foligno. Residence Menotre you will find nestled in the wooded hills overlooking the charming village of Rasiglia. This unique stone building was once a defensive tower of Trinci's Castle, Lords of Foligno.
