Canada's low age of consent for sexual intercourse is composing a risk to our Canadian children. Canada's age of sexual consent is 14, one of the lowest in the world .Because of the low age of consent,predators are looking at Canada as their playground.

It is evident that Canada must raise the age of consent from 14 years to at least 16 years of age, I myself would prefer to see it 18.Adolescents cannot purchase cigarettes or alcohol until they are at least over 18 years of age. They are given special protection under the criminal justice system until 18. They can't purchase adult material until 18.So why are they permitted to consent to sexual activity at 14?

As a parent, I know there is a huge difference in maturity between a my 14-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old girl. They are not as easily manipulated at 16." What we have in force right now is a law that protects the predators instead of the children. Highest priority , before all else is the need to protect innocent and vulnerable children from sexual predators. However this is something our Government of Canada is failing in doing.

How many more people have to go before the house of parliament before they realize that the bill needs be addressed? The government is being given an opportunity to send a clear message to Canadians that it will not stand for the abuse of innocent children by sexual predators. "Canada adults may legally have sex with children as young as age fourteen." This must be stopped.

The current age of consent leaves children and teenagers open to becoming targets of Internet sex scams, pornographers, pedophiles and sexual abuse. In 2002, most of the Liberal, New Democrat in the Commons - including Paul Martin - voted against a non-binding Canadian Alliance motion that would have raised the age of sexual consent from the current age of 14 to 16 and prohibited the "creation or use of sexually explicit materials exploiting children."

The rationale behind the current law is that two 14 year olds should not be punished for engaging in consensual sexual activity. Well just like the harm of alcohol, cigarettes, and physical assault engaging in sex to early do come with a consequence a child of 14 is not even ready to handle. Canada's children of fourteen years and older are expected to defend themselves from sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancies, and the factor emotional of a consenting relationship. Back to the internet issue, Because of concern is the current age of consent. More and more US citizens are traveling to Canada to meet 14 and 15 year olds for sexual purposes. The age of consent in most US states is 16. Therefore, there is nothing stopping a 44 year old man to travel to Canada to have sex with a 14 year old.

Canadians are encourage to write their members of parliament asking that the age of sexual consent be raised to 16.

Over 500,000 Canadians signed a CFAC petition asking the federal government to change the child porn laws and rid it of the "artistic merit" excuse clause. Over 40,000 people sent a letter to Justice Minister Cauchon asking that the age of consent be raised to 18, and the Canadian Police Association has twice before asked for the age to be raised. Internationally, Canada has established a reputation as a sex tourism "hot spot" and an attractive destination for pedophiles.

The only way to protect our children is to make a stand to make a Motion to Parliament to protect children from sexual predators and raise the legal age of sexual consent to 16 years of age. Canada are you with me ?
